Mail Processing Moves to Miami

As a result of studiesbegun five months ago, the Postal Service has made the decision to move all mailprocessing operations from the Fort Lauderdale Processing and DistributionCenter, 1900 W Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, and the South FloridaProcessing and Distribution Center, 16000 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, to theMiami Processing and Distribution Center, 2200 NW 72 Ave, Miami.

Once the transfer is completed, the mailprocessing operations in Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines facilitieswill cease. There will be no change to the Retail Unit or Business Mail EntryUnit at these Broward locations at this time. The Vehicle Maintenance Facility located at the Fort LauderdaleProcessing and Distribution Center will remain operationalat this time.

The Postal Service has experienced a 25 percentdecline in First-Class Mail volume since 2006, and receives no tax dollars forits operations, relying instead on the sale of postage, and postal products andservices.

“The decision to consolidate mail processingfacilities recognizes the urgent need to reduce the size of the national mailprocessing network to eliminate costly underutilized infrastructure,” saidChief Operating Officer Megan Brennan. “Consolidating operations is necessary if the Postal Service is toremain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”

Specific dates have not been set for thetransition.  Until a specific date has beenannounced, residential and business mailers will continue to be served throughthe current facilities.

In December 2011, the Postal Service agreed toimpose a moratorium on closing or consolidating Post Offices and mailprocessing facilities prior to May 15, 2012, to give Congress and theAdministration the opportunity to enact an alternative plan.

This delay was designed to allow Congresssufficient time to enact comprehensive postal legislation.  In the meantime, the Postal Service continuedall necessary steps required for the review of these facilities, includingpublic notifications, public input meetings and consideration of public comments.

Implementation of these consolidations is contingent upon the outcome of pending rulemaking for a proposal to review existing service standards.  This announcement is provided in advance so that appropriate planning and notification can be made in accordance with existing employee agreements.

A list of mail processing studies and their status is available at usps.com/ourfuturenetwork.  Specific information about individualstudies, including public meeting summaries and summary briefs, will be postedon the website, usps.com/areamailprocessing, as it becomesavailable.
